Mens B Team Review

Review of the 2017 season

What a difference twelve months makes

In 2016 Congleton Mens B team were struggling - with injuries and unavailability due to work commitments the team had to withdraw from the South and Mid Cheshire League First Division

Fast forward a year and the team are celebrating as champions of division two

At the start of the season the decision was made to combine players from the previous year's B and C teams and have a push for promotion back to the top flight

A strong second division saw the team neck and neck all the way through with rivals Alsager and Hartford D , with Congleton B snatching the title and hence promotion in the last but one week with a victory over Hartford E

The team played consistently well throughout the season and the title was just rewards for their efforts

Highights of the season included battling through atrocious weather conditions to win away at Nantwich C early in the campaign , Make and Ian somehow clawing back what looked like a lost cause and winning the final set away at Wistaston A to secure a draw , Andrew fighting a sickness bug and frequent dashes off court in the home match against the same opposition to ensure a vital victory and the relief in the all important away match at Hartford E when Toby delivered a service ace to clinch the required set and the match which secured the title

The team has consisted primarily of captain Toby Miller , Andrew Giltrap and Ian Walker joined by Mark Wakefield for the first part of the season before his relocation to London and then Pete Wardlaw for the second half of the season

Mark Smith , Evan Holland and Peter Dallow also played in the team during the season

Thanks to all the opposition for an incredibly hard fought campaign all round but particularly Cuddington A for their fantastic refreshments (as ever) in the White Barn and Tarporley A for their usual camaraderie and two high quality encounters

Also thanks to Toby for providing the excellent home made cakes at home matches courtesy of Mrs Miller and his daughter - a future star baker !!

Finally a big thanks to those who have played , those who have contributed in any way and those who have supported the team either on home match nights or with advice and encouragement when some players began to doubt themselves
