My First Tennis Tournament a Great Success

Report on latest tournament

“Tennis for all ages and abilities ” is the strap line at Congleton Tennis Club. New members have come into the club via classes on a Saturday morning for people who want to start tennis or to improve their game. This Saturday the club coach, Istvan Kaplan, gave these players an opportunity to test out their skills in what he called “My First Tennis Tournament”.
Twenty four people played in the tournament, most of them had come into the club through the Saturday morning classes, but they were joined by a few more members who have not played team tennis for the club.
Istvan had devised a format with everybody playing five rounds of matches in different partnerships. Mercifully, the rain which had been forecast all week did not materialise and everyone was kept busy all morning playing tennis.
There were lots of close matches and at the end of five rounds the two ladies and the two men with the best scores played a final match. They were cheered on from the club’s balcony by the other competitors. Leanne Porter and Tony Phillips won a close tie-break 7-5 to emerge as the winners. The runners up were Jackie Moors and Adam Post. All the finalists won a medal and the winners received cut-glass trophies which had been donated by one of the players.
The players thanked Istvan for organising the event and hoped he would run another one soon.
