Chairs Trophy

Chairs Trophy

From the very start it was clear the wind was going to be the biggest winner on the day, but despite very blustery conditions, 20 brave souls tried to keep hold of their rackets and battled for the chair’s trophy.

Steve Carter, Eilleen Grigg and Amanda Richardson were first out of the blocks with very decent first round scores, with Lindsay Newton and Greg Whitecross nudging closer after round two.

Round three saw an impressive clean sheet from both Richard Shipton and Eileen, with Heather Bryson catching the eye in the final round.

New members Greg and Celia Whitecross had impressed throughout with their standard of play, and both were eagerly being courted between points by league team captains.

At the end of the round robin, scores were tight, but a consistent Russell Finch tied the men’s lead with Steve at 22 games each, while Eileen led the ladies with the top score of the day of 26 games, Amanda making it over the line in second with 21 games.

So, Steve and Elieen faced Amanda and Russell in the tiebreak, which was closely fought despite the wind causing some rather unusual rallies, with Eileen and Steve falling over the line first, winning by 15-10.

Music was provided (as usual) by DJ Mandy, and at times the on-court dancing was a better standard than the tennis.

At the end we were treated to some information and winners’ prizes from Stephanie at SC Elite Sports Massage, with the runners up receiving chocolate from the Happy Cow Chocolate Company.

Thanks also went to Andrew Giltrap for organising, and chair Rob McNinch for running the tournament on the day.
